Valuing antibiotics: the role of the hospital clinician

Antibiotic-resistant infections and the lack of new treatment options in clinical development is widely acknowledged as a critical threat to global public health. This review article, written by the clinicians who attended the Office of Health Economics (OHE) and the Academy of Infection Management (AIM) forum in 2017, identifies the current challenges of this global public health threat and recommends actions to increase awareness and understanding, along with the practical steps that clinicians can take. These could include identifying and gathering appropriate alternative data sources, educating on antimicrobial stewardship and prescribing habits, and contributing to international antibiotic susceptibility surveillance models.
